Semicolon

Semicolons (;) serve two basic functions:

1. To separate closely related, independent clauses that are not joined by and,but, or or

A revolutionary design is one matter; executing the design in record time is quite another.

2. To substitute for a comma when the items to be separated contain internal commas

Users gain access to numerous other tools, including: the Statistical Analysis System (SAS), a statistical analysis and graphics reporting package; the ACCESS Query Interface (AQI), a menu-driven query system; ...

The word that follows a semicolon is not capitalized unless it is a proper noun. The semicolon is placed after the closing quotation mark or parenthesis.
