Instructions for Speakers

Assigned speaking time

Please arrive at the A/V table 15 minutes prior to your assigned speaking time to have the lapel microphone attached and tested. Return it to the A/V table when your presentation is finished.

  • Your presentation will be brought up on the data projector screen (transparencies are not allowed) automatically at the appropriate time.
  • Presenters will have the use of a remote mouse to advance or reverse the PowerPoint slides.
  • A laser pointer will be available from the podium.
  • You must keep to the allotted time given for your presentation.  A timer will be available to help you monitor your time. Each presenter has a total of 25 minutes for the presentation and Q&A.

Speaker Rehearsal

Speakers are encouraged to attend a speaker rehears ak session on Tuesday, October 21 or Wednesday October 22 from 5-7 PM.  Experienced A/V technicians will be available during this time to assist you with reviewing your presentation onscreen and to familiarize you with the set-up, equipment, etc.

A sign-up sheet for 10 minute rehearsal sessions will be available at the registration desk during the reception by 5PM on Tuesday, October 21 and Wednesday October 22.

Speaker Suggestions

  • Preparation is essential: Rehearse the delivery before a friend or group.
  • Control your breathing: Speak slowly and distinctly in a normal voice.  Hold your speaking level through to the end of each sentence; don’t let your voice run down.
  • Look at your audience: This holds their attention and allows you to project your voice into the room, rather than down at the lectern.
  • Everyone enjoys humor: Except when it’s inappropriate or poorly executed.
  • Watch your time: Use an agenda to guide the audience and yourself throughout the presentation.  During the rehearsal, determine at which point in time you should arrive at each topic.  The session chair will manage adherence to the allocated time.
  • Be sensitive to your audience:
    • Assume some familiarity with your topic in general.
    • Keep language simple and understandable.
    • Strive to clarify rather than to obscure; be explanatory, not evasive. Avoid jargon and acronyms.
    • Eliminate everything that isn’t directly related to the point of your presentation.
    • A listener who would like to talk further about your presentation can consult with you immediately after the session, or make an appointment with you during or after the conference.

Instructions for Poster Presenters

The purpose of a poster presentation is to use a display (poster board) to summarize the study described in your abstract. A poster session allows you the opportunity to discuss your work and answer questions. Poster presentations are included in the Symposium proceedings.

POSTER SESSION SCHEDULE
Tuesday, October 21 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Wednesday, October 22 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

All posters must be ready by 4PM Tuesday, October 21. Each poster presenter will have 48 inches of floor space with approximately three feet between posters.

Poster presenters are expected to stay at their poster during the scheduled poster sessions.

All poster boards must be removed by 2:00pm on Thursday, October 23.

Mounting Instructions

You will be responsible for mounting your slides on the poster board prior to the beginning of the poster sessions. Please contact Symposium personnel at the registration desk for the location where poster boards and glue sticks may be picked up.

Please hang your poster as soon as the boards are available—ISMI Symposium attendees will be anxious to see your results.
