ISMI ESH Technology Center

In today’s business climate, corporations must be prepared to respond to new ESH challenges, driven not only by a continually evolving global regulatory environment, but also by the expectations of investors, customers, and the communities in which they operate.

Market- and investor-driven concepts such as corporate social responsibility, sustainable development, and the green supply chain have emerged as significant forces for greater ESH engagement and performance.

Environmental leadership offers proven, valuable opportunities in effective resource utilization and cost savings, resulting in improved financial performance and competitive advantage, including:

  • Corporate image and brand differentiation achieved by offering unique products and capabilities that have minimal environmental impact and demonstrate responsible resource management.
  • Reduced reliance on utilities and resources which may have the potential to interrupt or limit corporate growth or manufacturing capacity.
  • Ensured business continuity by anticipating and proactively responding to global ESH initiatives and regulations that may impact the manufacture or sale of products in a regional setting.
  • Adoption of environmentally preferable “green supply chain” practices, which favor products manufactured, packaged, and distributed with superior ESH characteristics.

Collaborative Research Solutions

The ISMI ESH Technology Center is the industry’s first world-wide collaborative research organization including chip manufacturers and equipment and material suppliers devoted to collectively finding and implementing the most cost-effective environmentally friendly manufacturing processes and procedures.

The center is the follow-on to more than 20 years of work that SEMATECH and ISMI have undertaken to promote energy and resource conservation, assess and address the environmental impact of semiconductor manufacturing; and advance green building and process development at our member companies.

Research at the ISMI ESH Technology Center is focused on:

  • Protecting the environment through energy conservation, efficient use of natural resources, and pollution prevention.
  • Ensuring a safe manufacturing environment through the development of processes, procedures, and guidelines to protect the facilities and its workers from harm.
  • Protecting human health through evaluations of new and existing process materials for harmful characteristics, and the development of guidelines for appropriate engineering and administrative controls.

Built on Proven Success

ISMI’s proven strength and ability to bring together partners from across the entire industry is crucial to the development of industry-wide environmentally sustainable semiconductor manufacturing processes.

The ISMI ESH Technology Center aims to solve the challenges of environmentally-friendly manufacturing faced by all industry sectors by:

  • Providing solutions for chemical management and evolving ESH regulatory initiatives
  • Assessing ESH impacts of semiconductor materials, equipment, and processes
  • Providing solutions for energy and resource conservation
  • Developing standards for green semiconductor operations and processes

Industry Partnerships Providing Maximum Member Value

Membership in the ISMI ESH Technology Center is open to chipmakers, equipment and materials suppliers. Members in the ISMI ESH Technology Center gain mutual benefit from the influence achieved by being part of consortium with broad industry participation, specifically by:

  • Leveraged funding of R&D projects
  • Ability to influence project work that is of particular interest to your company
  • Access to ideas, knowledge, technical database
  • Sharing benchmark data and participation in various ESH surveys
